Embryotoxicity of Five Cytostatics in Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas) Larvae

چکیده
Cytostatics are compounds used in chemotherapy, known to be genotoxic, mutagenic, and teratogenic at low concentrations. The amount of cytostatic drugs prescribed increases every year as does their release into the aquatic ecosystems, which possibly is a major concern for health organisms. This study aimed evaluate putative toxicity five cytostatics fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) larvae: tamoxifen, capecitabine, methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide. Eggs collected post-fertilization were exposed 6 days range concentrations, including one above environmental level. At all no significant difference mortality, hatching time, length, heart rate, presence malformations found. Altogether, these do not seem embryotoxic fish. Although, an increased proportion complete swim bladder found after ifosfamide’s exposure, suggesting interaction with thyroid axis, involved development. Complementary work should address other endpoints, such behavioral changes, reproductive success, transgenerational effects.

Atrazine reduces reproduction in fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas).
Atrazine, the widely used herbicide, has shown to affect the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis in certain vertebrate species, but few studies have examined reproductive effects of this chemical on fish. Our study was designed to evaluate a population endpoint (egg production) in conjunction with histological (e.g., gonad development) and biochemical (e.g., hormone production) phenotypes associa...
متن کاملHistopathology of fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) exposed to hydroxylated fullerenes
Hydroxylated fullerenes are reported to be very strong antioxidants, acting to quench reactive oxygen species, thus having strong potential for important and widespread applications in innovative therapies for a variety of disease processes. However, their potential for toxicological side effects is still largely controversial and unknown. Effects of hydroxylated fullerenes C60(OH)24 on the fat...
متن کاملEffects of 17alpha-ethinylestradiol in a fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) gonadal recrudescence assay.
To contribute to the development and evaluation of a practical and cost-effective in vivo testing system for endocrine disruption (specifically environmental estrogens), the effects of 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) were assessed in a gonadal recrudescence assay with the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas). Mature male and female fathead minnows were kept first at 15 degrees C on a 8 h light/1...

The viral susceptibility range of a poikilothermic cell line derived from the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) (FHM) to infection by a number of homoiothermic viruses representing most of the presently recognized viral groups and a member of the psittacosis-lymphogranuloma-trachoma group of agents was studied. All infectious agents, except poliovirus types 1 and 3, infectious bursal agent, ...
متن کاملCharacterisation and expression of β1-, β2- and β3-adrenergic receptors in the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas).
Complimentary DNAs for three beta-adrenergic receptors (βARs) were isolated and characterised in the fathead minnow. The encoded proteins of 402 (β(1)AR), 397 (β(2)AR) and 434 (β(3)AR) amino acids were homologous to other vertebrate βARs, and displayed the characteristic seven transmembrane helices of G Protein-coupled receptors. Motifs and amino acids shown to be important for ligand binding w...
